Sclerotherapy

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective, minimally invasive procedure that can greatly diminish the appearance of spider veins on the legs. After treatment, the vessels gradually fade, leaving noticeably clearer, more attractive legs. You should not have sclerotherapy performed if there is a possibility being pregnant.

One can expect 50-80% improvement in varicosities after all treatment sessions have been completed. Some may see more improvement than others. After the procedure, it may take 6 to 12 weeks to see the full response.

You may need several sessions 6 to 12 weeks apart to get to your desired results. Patients most likely will develop new varicosities off and on in the future, which may require further touching up. Treatment of venous disease is a process as opposed to an event.

If your varicosities have an associated aching or cramping during your daily activity, it is possible for 50% of patients to see improvement of these symptoms.

FAQ’s

What are spider veins?
Spider veins or “telangectasias” are small veins under the skin which usually develop from dilated blood channels connected with underlying larger veins. Reticular veins are slightly larger superficial veins which are connected to the spider veins.
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a method of treatment for spider veins and reticular veins in which a solution called a sclerosant is injected into the veins to cause eventual closing of the vein, making it disappear.
Will sclerotherapy “cure” my spider veins?
The majority of patients having sclerotherapy will have marked improvement in their visible spider veins. Rarely are there poor results with little or no improvement. (“poor results” means the veins have not completely disappeared after several treatments). Unfortunately, there is no cure for your genetic tendency to develop new spider veins.
How man sessions will I need?
The number of treatments needed to clear or improve the condition differs from patient to patient, depending on the extent of varicose and spider veins present. The average number is three to four.
What are the possible side effects and/or complications of sclerotherapy?
There are several side effects that will be discussed as well as a printed sheet given to you before your treatment. Please ask your provider if you have any additional questions.
