At Sutton Dermatology, we offer expert diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer led by a team of board-certified dermatologists, including two fellowship-trained Mohs skin cancer surgeons.
If your skin biopsy reveals skin cancer, your dermatologist will recommend one of several procedures based on factors such as:
The type of skin cancer
Where the skin cancer is located
Your specific medical needs
It’s estimated that over a million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer annually, making it the most prevalent type of cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is highly treatable, especially if you understand what to watch out for and visit your dermatologist regularly for early detection.
Sutton Dermatology offers the region’s most advanced skin cancer diagnostic and treatment solutions. Your care is overseen by two fellowship-trained Mohs specialists within an in-house, state-of-the-art skin cancer center. Our unsurpassed level of care, comfort, expertise, and efficiency makes Sutton Dermatology your trusted skin cancer treatment clinic in Lincoln for patients throughout Nebraska.
Types of Skin Cancer
Because skin cancer is highly treatable, it’s important—and empowering—to know how to identify pre-cancerous warning signs. It’s also helpful to understand how dermatologists classify the types of skin cancer:
Actinic Keratoses
Sometimes referred to as pre-cancerous lesions, actinic keratoses are caused by prolonged sun exposure and typically form on the face, neck, ears, scalp, lower arms, and back of the hands. Actinic keratoses can be improved by cryotherapy (freezing), prescription cream, photodynamic therapy, or sometimes monitored.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
The most common type of skin cancer, BCC usually appears on the head and neck as a small, fleshy bump, nodule, or red patch. It’s caused by uncontrolled proliferation of basal cells in our skin and typically spreads slowly. Risk factors for developing BCCs include chronic ultraviolet light exposure, light eyes, and fair skin. BCCs can take months or even years to grow to a one-half-inch diameter. Therefore, it’s easily curable when identified and treated early. Untreated, the cancer will often begin to bleed, crust over, heal, and repeat the cycle.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas are frequently found on the ear, face, hands, and lower legs. This cancer may appear as a bump or a red, scaly patch. SCCs can grow more quickly than BCCs.
Melanoma
Melanoma is one of the most aggressive types of skin cancer. However, it is usually curable when detected in its early stages. It develops from melanocytes, or cells that produce pigment in our skin. Melanoma may appear suddenly or begin in or around a mole or another dark spot on the skin. That’s why having your moles checked regularly by a dermatologist is essential. We can determine if there’s any suspicious or unusual growth or change. Early melanoma can be removed while still in the curable stage.

Skin Cancer Prevention
As the region’s leading authority on skin cancer treatment, we’re equipped to handle all of your concerns, but we also empower you to play an active role in your skin health. Some simple yet effective ways to minimize your risk of skin cancer include:
Avoid excessive sun exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are the most intense.
Refrain from tanning and using tanning beds.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher.
Wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats.
Exercise vigilance when helping infants and young children avoid sun exposure.
Develop a routine for self-inspecting your body for moles or other skin changes.
See your dermatologist immediately if you notice any unusual or suspicious skin changes.
You should be extra vigilant about sun protection if you have freckles, moles, or skin that burns easily. Anyone can get skin cancer, but fair-skinned individuals and those with a family history of skin cancer may have a higher risk.
