What Causes Psoriasis?

Recent discoveries point to inflammation and an abnormal immune response in the skin. Psoriasis can be activated by infections such as Strep throat. Flare ups sometimes occur in the winter as a result of dry skin and lack of sunlight.

Treatment

For mild cases topical agents can be effective. These include corticosteroids, Vitamin A , and Vitamin D creams and ointments among others. For moderate to severe cases there are many choices for systemic medications. Some agents, called biologics, target parts of the immune system which trigger inflammation and are administered via injection. Other systemic agents for psoriasis can be administered orally.
