Atopic Dermatitis or Eczema

Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a skin eruption consisting of dry, itchy, and inflamed areas typically where the skin folds such as the inside of the elbows, behind the knees, and the neck. It is more commonly seen in children, but can affect all age groups. It often occurs in the same individuals who suffer from seasonal allergies and/or asthma.

Treatments

Treating dry skin is a mainstay of treatment. This consists of regular use of emollients and mild cleansers, and avoiding irritants to the skin. Next would be topical prescription medications such as corticosteroids and immune modulators which come in creams, ointments, and lotions. Several systemic options which are very effective for moderate to severe cases are also available. Your dermatologist will present the options and help you choose the treatment plan which best fits your needs.
