What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins (telangiectasias) form when tiny valves inside your veins become weak and damaged, causing blood to accumulate. As pressure builds, varicose veins can form by bulging above the skin’s surface, while spider veins often look like purplish webs. You have a greater likelihood of developing spider veins if:

  • They’re in your DNA (spider veins are hereditary).
  • You sit or stand for long periods.
  • You have an injury.
  • You’re experiencing hormonal changes or aging.

While sclerotherapy is the go-to treatment for spider veins on the legs, laser therapy is recommended for the small vessels on the face.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy works by injecting a solution called sclerosant directly into the targeted veins to diminish their appearance. After being injected, the vessels gradually fade, leaving noticeably clearer and more even skin on your legs.

Here’s what to expect during sclerotherapy treatment at Sutton Aesthetics:

  • Evaluate vessels and choose which ones to treat
  • Insert a needle into the targeted vessel and inject the sclerosant
  • Treat multiple vessels in the same manner
  • Apply a dressing over treated vessels and wear a compression stocking on the treated leg

The number of injections you receive depends on your unique needs and the size of the area being treated. Treatment usually takes under an hour, and more than one treatment may be necessary to achieve your desired results. While sclerotherapy is safe for all skin tones and types, it is not recommended if there is a possibility you may be pregnant.

What Should I Expect After Sclerotherapy?

You don’t need to plan for any downtime after sclerotherapy, but you should prepare for some bruising, which can persist for about a week. We also recommend refraining from tanning, hot baths, or flying for at least 1-week post-treatment. Taking gentle walks and wearing compression socks can help treated veins heal faster.

After sclerotherapy, your veins will noticeably diminish over 6 to 8 weeks. Many patients require multiple sessions to achieve and maintain their desired results.

Sclerotherapy FAQ

Does sclerotherapy permanently “cure” my spider veins?

Most patients have marked improvement in spider veins—you can expect 50% to 80% improvement after completing all treatment sessions. It’s possible to develop new spider veins from time to time, so periodic sclerotherapy touch-ups may be necessary in the future.

Is sclerotherapy a risky treatment?

Complications are extremely unlikely with sclerotherapy. Some patients experience bruising, inflammation, and redness, but these side effects gradually resolve after a few weeks. While rare, “matting” and other side effects are possible; your provider will discuss potential side effects with you before treatment. When the treatment is performed correctly by our skilled dermatology team, sclerotherapy is considered highly effective and safe.

Does sclerotherapy also treat varicose veins?

Unlike spider veins, more prominent varicose veins typically require different interventions. During your personalized consultation, we assess vessels to determine if you are a candidate.
