Seeing Red? Let’s Talk Rosacea – and How We Can Help

Written by Margaret Kontras Sutton, M.D. –

Rosacea, a common skin condition, consists of redness of the face, especially the nose and cheeks. It is a chronic condition and in addition to the redness, can progress to small red bumps with pustules.
If you think you may have rosacea, see your dermatologist to make the diagnosis as there may be other conditions (such as acne, dermatitis, or lupus) which may look similar.

Fortunately, at Sutton Dermatology + Aesthetics we have solutions and suggestions for this dilemma.  There are a number of prescription creams to address the redness and the bumps. Some creams will help with the redness such as oxymetazoline for example. There are creams which contain metronidazole, azaleic acid, or ivermection to help with the pimples. There are even some oral medications which are effective.

Rosacea-prone skin is very sensitive; therefore, toners, astringents, or harsh cleaners should be avoided. Let us advise you on a skin regimen for rosacea-prone skin. This could include a product such as All Calm Clinical Redness Corrector SPF 50 which contains a sunscreen as well as a tint to conceal redness. There are also lasers and devices at Sutton Aesthetics which can address redness as well as the visible blood vessels which can appear as part of rosacea.

If you suspect you may have rosacea, don’t ignore the signs. A proper diagnosis is the first step toward effective treatment. At Sutton Dermatology + Aesthetics, we’re here to help with customized skin care plans, prescription options, and in-office treatments designed to reduce redness and improve your skin’s appearance.
