To Peel or Not to Peel….that is the question! Chemical peels are something that I recommend for my patients for many issues including acne scarring, brightening of the complexion, fine lines and wrinkles, pigment issues and improvement of skin tone and texture. Not uncommonly patients come in asking about peels simply because they have heard of them. So today I want to provide you with a basic overview of peels so you can decide if a peel is for you.
Having a chemical peel means that an acid is applied in layers to the skin. When applied, mild to moderate stinging (or “spiciness” as we call it) is to be expected. The procedure itself takes about 25 minutes or so to do. Over the next couple days skin starts to peel off which then reveals healthier skin underneath – free of the superficial layer of dead skin.
When considering whether to peel or not to peel, one should consider downtime. Medium and deep peels do require about a week or so of “downtime” in that you will have obvious peeling and some redness while the process is happening. Also, generally a series of peels is recommended. The more that you do, the better. Most people will notice a nice improvement after just one, but we typically recommend anywhere from 2-6 depending on the condition we are treating. Sun exposure must also be considered since we are ridding the top layer of dead skin, leaving the fresh new skin underneath exposed. You would be more likely to burn if outside without sunscreen, so a good sunscreen after is an absolute must! Furthermore, go to someone that you trust. I may be biased, but I wouldn’t just go to anyone to receive a chemical peel. It is imperative that one understands the layers of the skin and the strength of the peel in order to provide the best results and personally I think that a dermatology office is a no brainer.
In our office we only do medical grade peels which means that they are stronger and can penetrate deeper than a peel that you would receive with an esthetician. This means that you would need fewer treatments, which in the long run can save you money while providing excellent results.
Whether tis nobler in the mind to peel, the beauty and glow of fresh new skin, or to bear arms against a sea of sun damage? Feel free to come see us for a consultation to decide if or which chemical peel is right for you! After all, to peel or not to peel…that is the question!
