Every time I take a walk down the skin product aisle, I’m overwhelmed.  It was worse in my younger years, when I depended on my friends’ endorsements and attractive labeling to select the perfect product for my sensitive skin. The unfortunate thing is that I really needed a GREAT product to help with my dry skin and eczema problems. Since I learned the hard way that not all products are created equal, I hope to save you some trouble when it comes to selecting the right products for your skin.

Before we get into products, it’s important to know that good skin care for us dry, sensitive-skinned girls (& guys) starts with bathing.  Most of my patients look at me with hesitation when I ask them to limit their bathing to quick, warm showers as opposed to long hot ones.  The longer and hotter the shower, the more moisture is lost.  And so we fight an uphill battle the minute we step out of the shower.

During that quick, warm shower, it’s important to use the right cleanser. Most soaps are harsh on the skin and so it’s crucial to use an emollient-rich cleanser that is fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and unscented.  Liquid cleansers are theoretically better, and one of my favorites is “Oil of Olay sensitive skin body wash”. However, if you can’t make yourself ditch the bar for a liquid cleanser, my favorite is “Dove unscented soap.”

The next step in any skin care regimen that is focused on improving skin integrity is a great moisturizer.  There are many moisturizers to choose from.  You generally have to make a decision between lotion, cream, and ointment.  Lotions typically have more water in them, making them thinner, easier to spread, and faster absorbing. They are typically thin enough to come in a pump and are great for hair-bearing areas.  Creams have a medium viscosity or heaviness, usually come in tubs or tubes and are reasonably hydrating without feeling too heavy or greasy. Sutton Ryan has a great cream call Vanicream that we sell in our clinic or online.  Lastly, ointments have the least amount of water and are typically the most hydrating. They are “occlusive” and trap heat and moisture very well. However, many feel they are too greasy for daily use.  A great choice for an ointment would be Vaniply, which we also sell in our clinic or online @ suttonderm.com. Your selection does depend on the needs of your skin as well as your own tolerability!

It is important to note that my favorite moisturizers have “ceramide” technology. Ceramides boost the skin’s natural ability to protect itself from moisture loss.  Two of my favorite products with this technology are Cetaphil RestoraDERM moisturizer and CeraVe (lotion or cream).  These products are wonderful at moisturizing without leaving a greasy residue.

Lastly, I recommend laundry detergents that are hypoallergenic and free of dyes and perfumes. Two of my favorites are “All Free & Clear” and “Tide Free & Gentle.”

Hopefully these recommendations will make your walk down that product aisle a little easier next time. Enjoy your summer of softer skin!
